10 Dicembre 2022The SPAR European Cross Country Championships Piemonte 2022-La Mandria Park in Venaria Reale (Turin) were officially presented on Saturday 10th December, on the eve of the event, in the Chapel of Sant'Uberto at Reggia di Venaria Reale (Piazza della Repubblica 4, Venaria Reale). The president of European Athletics Dobromir Karamarinov, the president of FIDAL Stefano Mei, the councilor for the budget and finances of the Piemonte Region Andrea Tronzano, the president of the Local Organizing Committee Gianfranco Lucchi took part to it. Among the athletes, the Azzurri Yeman Crippa and Nadia Battocletti, the German Konstanze Klosterhalfen, the British Charles Hicks met the press.
Gli Europei di Piemonte 2022-La Mandria Park a Venaria Reale (Torino) sono stati presentati ufficialmente sabato 10 dicembre, alla vigilia dell’evento, nella Cappella di Sant’Uberto presso la Reggia di Venaria Reale (Piazza della Repubblica 4, Venaria Reale). Sono intervenuti il presidente della European Athletics Dobromir Karamarinov, il presidente della FIDAL Stefano Mei, l’assessore al bilancio e alle finanze della Regione Piemonte Andrea Tronzano, il presidente del Comitato Organizzatore Locale Gianfranco Lucchi. Tra gli atleti, hanno incontrato la stampa gli azzurri Yeman Crippa e Nadia Battocletti, la tedesca Konstanze Klosterhalfen, il britannico Charles Hicks.
EUROCROSS NUMBERS - 40 countries, 555 athletes (303 men, 252 women), 13 titles to be awarded. All the reigning Dublin 2021 champions will be at the start on Sunday 11th December: the Norwegians Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal, who triumphed in the senior category, Nadia Battocletti and the British Charles Hicks in the U23 one, the Danish Axel Vang Christensen and the British Megan Keith (this time competing among the U23s) who won as a U20.
I NUMERI DEGLI EUROCROSS - 40 paesi, 555 atleti (303 uomini, 252 donne), 13 titoli da assegnare. YEMAN CRIPPA (ITA)
It is his tenth time at the European Cross Country Championships. Yeman Crippa has reached the individual podium in each category he competed, twice U20 gold medal, twice U23 bronze, once silver among seniors in the Lisbon edition from three years ago. The most eagerly awaited man for Italy, the "local hero" of the Azzurri, is the European champion of the 10,000m and the bronze medalist of the 5,000m, protagonist of an amazing season on the track and on the road, and determined to complete it with an excellent performance also in the cross country race in front of the home crowd who will support him on the course of La Mandria Park. The Italian athlete has prepared for Piemonte 2022 by training for over a month in Kenya, in the Rift Valley, at 2400m in Iten, and wants to redeem himself after withdrawing from the last edition in Dublin. This year, in addition to the good results on the track, he has had important experiences on the road, clocking the second European time ever in the half marathon with 59:26 in Naples (first Italian under 60 minutes) and setting the European record for the 5 km in Herzogenaurach with 13:14. Results that have strengthened his ambitions as a marathon runner: his debut in the 42.195km is expected for next spring. Born in Ethiopia, he arrived in Italy at the age of seven when he was adopted by the Milanese couple Crippa, since youth categories he has shown all his talent by winning medals and breaking records repeatedly, until he broke the Italian records of 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m. One of his brothers, Nekagenet, is also in the national team for the EuroCross.
È la sua decima volta agli Europei di cross: Yeman Crippa è salito sul podio individuale in ognuna delle categorie, due volte medaglia d’oro da under 20, due volte bronzo da under 23, una volta argento tra i senior nell’edizione di Lisbona di tre anni fa. L’uomo più atteso per l’Italia, il “local hero” degli azzurri, è certamente il campione europeo dei 10.000 metri e bronzo dei 5000 metri, protagonista di una splendida stagione in pista e su strada, e determinato a completarla con un’ottima prova anche nella corsa campestre davanti al pubblico di casa che lo sosterrà sul percorso del Parco La Mandria. L’azzurro si è preparato all’evento di Piemonte 2022 allenandosi per oltre un mese in Kenya, nella Rift Valley, ai 2400 metri di Iten, e vuole riscattarsi dopo essersi ritirato nella scorsa edizione di Dublino. Quest’anno, oltre alle gioie su pista, ha vissuto importanti esperienze su strada, siglando il secondo tempo europeo di sempre nella mezza maratona con 59:26 a Napoli (primo italiano sotto i 60 minuti) e stabilendo il primato europeo dei 5 km a Herzogenaurach con 13:14. Risultati che hanno rafforzato le sue ambizioni da maratoneta: il debutto nei 42,195 km è atteso per la prossima primavera. Nato in Etiopia, arrivato in Italia all’età di sette anni quando è stato adottato dai coniugi milanesi Crippa, fin dalle categorie giovanili ha mostrato tutto il suo talento vincendo medaglie e battendo record a ripetizione, fino ad appropriarsi dei primati italiani di 3000, 5000 e 10.000. Nella squadra azzurra per gli EuroCross è convocato anche uno dei suoi fratelli: Nekagenet.
NADIA BATTOCLETTI (ITA)
Carrying on a family tradition - her father Giuliano was team gold medalist in Ferrara 1998 - Nadia Battocletti tries to extend her streak of victories at the European Cross Country Championships to four consecutive successes. Grown up in Trentino like Yeman Crippa, the young Italian athlete won the European cross country titles in Tilburg 2018 and Lisbon 2019 in U20 age-group and then, after a year off due to the pandemic, in Dublin 2021 the U23 gold, when she also won the team title. In Piemonte he wants to give Italy a new double medal, supported by local fans who will push her with their warmth. There is not only cross country in the career of Battocletti, still 22 years old, already at high levels even on the track. The most prestigious result is certainly the seventh place at the Tokyo Olympics in the 5000m when she came close to the Italian record with 14:46.29. In the summer she also finished seventh at the European Championships in Munich on the same distance, after coming back from an injury that affected her season. In her youthful career she stood out above all for the U23 title of the 5000m conquered in Tallinn, contributing to Italy's first place in the final medal table, but also for the previous medals of Grosseto and Boras. She also combined the sporting activity with the university, attended with profit, in the faculty of construction engineering and architecture in Trento. Morocco is also in DNA, on the side of her mother Jawhara Saddougui: it is no coincidence that the athlete who inspires her the most is Hicham El Guerrouj.

Cresciuta in Trentino come Yeman Crippa, la giovane azzurra ha conquistato i titoli europei della corsa campestre a Tilburg 2018 e Lisbona 2019 da under 20 e poi, dopo l’anno di stop per la pandemia, a Dublino 2021 da under 23, quando vinse anche il titolo a squadre. In Piemonte vuole regalare all’Italia una nuova doppietta, sostenuta dai tifosi locali che la spingeranno con il loro calore. Non c’è soltanto il cross nella carriera di Battocletti, ancora 22enne, già ad alti livelli anche su pista. Il risultato di maggiore prestigio è certamente il settimo posto alle Olimpiadi di Tokyo nei 5000 metri quando ha sfiorato il record italiano con 14:46.29. In estate si è classificata settima anche agli Europei di Monaco di Baviera nella stessa distanza, al rientro da un infortunio che ha condizionato la sua stagione. Nel suo percorso giovanile si è distinta soprattutto per il titolo U23 dei 5000 metri conquistato a Tallinn, contribuendo al primo posto dell’Italia nel medagliere finale, ma anche per le precedenti medaglie di Grosseto e Boras. All’attività sportiva abbina anche l’università, frequentata con profitto, nella facoltà di ingegneria edile e architettura a Trento. Nel suo dna c’è anche il Marocco, dalla parte di mamma Jawhara Saddougui: non è un caso che l’atleta a cui si ispira di più è Hicham El Guerrouj.
KONSTANZE KLOSTERHALFEN (GER)
Gold medalist this year in 5000m race at the European Championships in Munich, after fourth place in the 10,000m one. The 25-year-old German has also often been a protagonist at the European Cross Country Championships, finishing fifth in the senior race of the last edition in Dublin, and has climbed the podium several times in the youth categories: she won the U20 title in 2015 and repeated it in 2016 in Italy, in Chia, and then in 2017 she conquered the U23 silver. In 2017 she became the youngest ever to run the 800m in less than 2:00, the 1500m in less than 4:00 and the 5000m in less than 15:00. Among "Koko"’s major results stands out the bronze in the 5000m at the World Championships in Doha in 2019 and, on the same distance, she is the European indoor record holder with 14:30.79 achieved in 2020. In the last race held, at the end of October, she impressed all at her debut in the half marathon running in 1h05:41 on the streets of Valencia, third European all time.

CHARLES HICKS (GBR)
He is the reigning champion among the under 23s, winner last year in Dublin after three consecutive gold medals by the French Jimmy Gressier. A year later, the British Charles Hicks has already added to his trophy cabinet the prestigious title of NCAA champion in the United States, where he studies cognitive science combined with sports at Stanford University. In Stillwater three weeks ago, Hicks became the first European athlete to win the university cross country title since 2000, only the fourth British to do so after Nick Rose (1974), Mark Scrutton (1982) and John Nuttall (1989). Born in London, he raised in Fulham before moving with his family to Florida at the age of twelve. In this track season, entirely held in the United States, he improved personal bests in 3000m (7:43.84), 5000m (13:24.58) and in 10,000m (27:40.16), beating the British U23 record after 51 years.
