29 Marzo 2018

The countdown begins for the event to be held on 9 and 10 June at the Picchi stadium with almost 400 athletes.

The countdown has started for the U23 Athletics Mediterranean Championships, scheduled in Jesolo on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June at the "Armando Picchi" stadium. The event, which will involve the best U23 athletes (born between 1996 and 2000) of the Mediterranean countries, was presented today in the Town Hall by the Mayor Valerio Zoggia, the General Secretary MAU Jean Gracia, the high jump Olympic champion Sara Simeoni and the General Director Vito Vittorio.

About 70 days before the start of competitions, preliminary entries counts 25 nations: in addition to Italy, have confirmed their presence teams of Albania, Algeria, Andorra, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Kosovo, Lebanon, Macedonia, Malta, Morocco, Monaco, Montenegro, Portugal, San Marino, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. About 400 athletes expected on the track. Forty-two titles are up for grabs: 21 for men and for women.

The under 23 Mediterranean Championships have a recent history: the event made its debut just four years ago with the aim of offering a new opportunity for comparison to athletes close to appear on the highest international stages. The event is held every two years (in alternating seasons compared to the European Championships of the category): the first edition was held in Aubagne, France, in 2014. The next one was staged in Tunis in 2016.

For Jesolo the review will have a double meaning: confirm the close relationships that links the Venetian seaside resort to the world of athletics (many editions of the Italian youth championships hosted in the last years in the Picchi stadium), waiting for the European EMAC (European Master Athletics Championships) that will take place in the stadiums and on the streets of the Venetian coast in September 2019. Jesolo is ready to get to the starting blocks. The direction of the event will be curated by FIDAL and by the local organizing committee, led by Vito Vittorio, with the supervision of the MAU (Mediterranean Athletics Union) and the support of the City of Jesolo.

"For Jesolo the one of the Mediterranean Championships is a great opportunity - said the mayor of the city of Jesolo Valerio Zoggia -. With this great sporting event, Jesolo confirms its association with athletics, which in our locality has always found an excellent point of reference and with sport in general, now an integral part of Jesolo's tourist offer. If we then think of the healthy values that involve sports, we can not but be satisfied for the honor of being able to host young boys and girls ready to field all their skills and potential. Thanks from the city of Jesolo to the organizers, to FIDAL, MAU and to Vito Vittorio for their commitment. Now we are waiting with open arms for the athletes and the races of the next 9 and 10 June".

“We all know how athletics - said MAU General Secretary Jean Gracia - has the power to go beyond borders: the third edition of Under 23 Mediterranean Championships are a real opportunity to promote values like inclusion and respect as well as to give the opportunity for the under 23 athletes around Mediterranean to compete. After Aubagne in France and Tunis in Tunisia, Jesolo will welcome almost 380 athletes from 25 nations that overlook the Mediterranean Sea, hosting the most participated edition in the history of the Championships. The 85% of the countries affiliated to Mediterranean Athletics Union (MAU) will arrive in Italy in june to compete at their best, witnessing their belief in inclusion and cooperation. I would like to thank the City of Jesolo, FIDAL and the local athletics club”.

"I have a wonderful memory of this event - says Sara Simeoni - in which I participated several times, some winning it. It's a sort of small Olympics, which allowed us to visit nations at the time not very accessible and learn new cultures. 2018 edition will be a real celebration of sport and athletics, of which our azzurri will certainly be protagonists".

The president of the Italian Athletics Federation Alfio Giomi send a message: "Jesolo believes in athletics, as demonstrated by the splendid editions organized here, in the last decade, of the Italian U18 and U16 Athletics Championships, and the CLub Championships, both absolute and master. On 9 and 10 June, the Picchi stadium will return to color with a major review, but this time dedicated to National teams. They will arrive in Jesolo from the 3 continents of Europe, Africa and Asia: on track and fields there will be our best young athletes, some already protagonists of the great world events, which will excite and exalt public and fans. On behalf of the Italian Athletics Federation I want to thank the Municipality, able to create an exemplary synergy on the territory, and the MAU for the great trust it has placed in us".
