Double senior title for Turkey with Aras Kaya’s gold in men’s race at the 23rd SPAR European Cross Country Championships. Four medals won by host nation Italy in Chia 2016.

Chia crowned the stars of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships on the spectacular backdrop of its lagoon. The location was surrounded by nature on a sunny Sunday morning of December which almost looked like a spring day. Italy crowned a successful edition with four medals. The highlight for the host nation was the gold medal won by the under 23 team captained by Yeman Crippa, who also won the individual bronze medal, the European Junior silver won by Yohanes Chiappinelli and the bronze medal won by the women’s European Under 23 team. The two senior races fulfilled the pre-event predictions confirming the dominance of Turkey. In the women’s 8 km Yasemin Can, reigning European gold medal in the 5000m and 10000m, celebrated her 20th birthday by winning the gold medal in 24:46 ahead of her compatriot Meryem Akda (24:56) and Norway’s Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal (25:26). It was the first individual gold medal ever for Turkey in the women’s race. Turkey also won the women’s title with 35 points ahead of Great Britain (51 points) and Romania (79 points).

Turkey scored the double by winning the men’s senior race where European 3000m steeplechase silver medallist Aras Kaya (27:39) edged his compatriot and double European 10000m champion Polat Kemboi Arikan by three seconds. Great Britain’s Callum Hawkins won the bronze medal in 27:49 leading the British squad to the team title (28 points) ahead of Spain (32 points) and Turkey (38 points). Hawkins finished ahead of his compatriots Andrew Butchart (fourth in 28:01) and Andy Vernon (fifth in 28:11). Marouan Razine finished in the top ten in ninth place with 28:27 leading Italy to fifth place with 82 points. The 24th edition of the European Cross Country Championships will be held in Samorin (Slovakia) on 10th December 2017.
