27 Aprile 2016

The Eternal City is getting ready to welcome the best walking specialists in the world. No less than 600 athletes from 56 countries are expected to compete on the course at the foot of the Colosseum.

Roma caput mundi. In just ten days Rome will become the world capital of the “toe and heel” discipline. The Eternal City will play host to the first edition of the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships on Saturday 7th May and Sunday 8th May on the course from the Arc of Constantine to the Baths of Caracalla. The revamped version of the historic IAAF World Walking Cup will make its return to Italy with a more exciting format after the editions of Varese 1963, Pescara 1965 and the splendid edition of Turin 2002.

The best walkers in the world – About 600 athletes from 56 countries are expected to compete, all the best walking specialists in the world, will be in Rome. The World Walking Team Championships have been, without doubt, one of the most important and eagerly awaited events among the “toe and heel” specialists, particularly this year as this event is scheduled three months before the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The great beauty- The course is definitely spectacular. The athletes will walk along a course steeped in history and in the timeless beauty of the Eternal City, which will start on the foot of the Colosseum, under the Arc of Costantine, run across the roads of the Rome Olympic marathon in 1960 (whose finish-line was located under the Arc of Costantine) in an evocative Olympic memory and finish in the heart of the Baths of Caracalla. The track of the Nando Martellini Stadium will be the heart of the world championships, which will be marked by a lot of promotional events during the weekend.

Olympic atmosphere – The World Walking Team Championships, which was assigned by the IAAF to Italy only on 7th January, has already an olympic flavour 100 days before the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The World Walking Race Championships will be staged between the memory of the marvellous edition of Rome 1960 and the present of the bid for the 2024 Olympic Games.

In the memory of Anna Rita – The logo of the World Championships is a tribute to the small but great Italian walking star, the unforgotten and unforgettable Anna Rita Sidoti. The small walker from Sicily with the backdrop of the Colisseum stands out on the logo of the 2016 IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in Rome.

A special award ceremony of the women’s race will be dedicated to her. Anna Rita Sidoti, world champion in Athens 1997, wife and mother of three children, passed away prematurely in 2015, moving the whole of Italy with her story of courage.
