Landmark day for Terzic on road to Chia

One gold, two silver and two bronze. There is no doubt the significance the SPAR European Cross Country Championships has had in the brilliant early career of Serbia’s Amela Terzic. Ahead now lies the senior race and the chance next month for Terzic to secure a medal at every age group after becoming such an important part of the event over the past six years.

An indication of how she is running will come on Saturday in Cuprija when Terzic competes at the 60th Balkan Cross Country Championships, just five weeks away from the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Chia. Around 400 athletes are due to take part in the event in Serbia, one of the biggest championships prior to the Euro Cross. Terzic was 23 in January but she made her mark last December in her final major event before being eligible for seniors-only when she finished third in the under-23 category last year in Hyères. That meant she had won five individual medals since 2010, a brilliant level of consistency which began with junior silver in Albufeira when she was 17, followed by bronze the following year in Velenje, before her greatest moment in Szentendre, Hungary, in 2012 when she triumphed in the junior race over 4km in 13:29. Moving up to under-23s, she was second in 2013 in Belgrade as the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan won gold, and then her bronze from 12 months ago.

And what exciting times these are for Terzic and her fellow Serbian athletes, with the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade in March, but first the tricky terrain of the cross country and the chance to make her mark again. It will be a landmark day as these Balkan Championships celebrate their 60th edition and they were originally planned for 12 March but had to be postponed because of heavy rain and flooding in Serbia. A year ago at the championships in Vrbovec, Turkey topped the table with 16 medals from Romania (10) and Croatia (4).
